When is a treatment therapeutic?

Most cosmetic treatments are strictly cosmetic. However, there are several types of treatment that are wholly or largely for therapeutic purposes. These include treatments to correct serious deformities, treatments to correct medical conditions, and treatments to correct problems arising from illness or injury.

Any of these types of procedure is considered therapeutic, and will likely be covered under your health insurance policy.

Some common therapeutic treatments include:
· Rhinoplasty
· Septoplasty
· Eye lifts, when used to correct vision problems
· Skin cancer reconstruction
· Facial paralysis treatments

Kids and Cosmetic Surgery

Children are neither physically nor emotionally mature enough for most cosmetic procedures. For this reason, cosmetic procedures are rarely performed on children except in cases of birth defects, injury, or other abnormalities.

Some of the more common cosmetic procedures that are performed on children include:

· Otoplasty and microtia treatment for malformation of the ear
· Cleft lip repair and cleft lip rhinoplasty
· Septoplasty, to correct breathing problems

Ethnicity and rhinoplasty

Many plastic surgeons work primarily with a single ethnic group. This practice largely ignores the unique qualities of other ethnic groups, so that patients not of the primary ethnicity can end up with unharmonious or dissonant looking features, particularly when it comes to the nose. Ethnic rhinoplasty takes into account a variety of factors, from features of the skin to the size, shape, and placement of the nose, to create natural looking, beautiful results no matter what your ethnic background.

Because an increasing number of patients are of mixed ethnicity, the finely honed skills of a surgeon experienced in ethnic rhinoplasty is all the more important.

· Types of procedures available, both surgical and non-surgical
· What type of results you expect
· Risks and potential complications of the procedures
