New usage of Botox for facial paralysis patients
Botox or botulinum toxin is a series of injections that temporarily reduces wrinkles and laugh lines in your face and neck.
Botox works by blocking nerve impulses to the muscles, temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause wrinkles. As a result, you aren’t able to squint, frown or raise your eyebrows as long as the effect lasts, which is typically around four months.
But these injections have also been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for a number of medical conditions. These include:

- Blepharospasm: A muscle disorder that controls the movement in your eyelids, causing them to spasm and blink uncontrollably.
- Cervical Dystonia: This condition is characterized by involuntary contractions in your neck and shoulders.
- Severe Underarm Sweating: Overactive sweat glands lead to this condition. Botox can temporarily block the chemical signals from the nerve that stimulate sweat glands, and has helped more than half of the patients treated.
- Crossed Eyes: Botox can help this condition by lengthening the injected eye muscle while shortening the opposing muscle.
