Get to Know Your Cosmetic Surgeon
When we are interested in buying a product or service, we almost always sample that product or service in some way. We like to know what we are investing our money in and what we can expect from our purchase. We test drive cars before we buy them, we sit on furniture before committing to the purchase, we even sample makeup before deciding which shade and name brand is right for us. We go through the research process to help ensure we find the right product or service for our individual needs. But how many people put the same effort into finding the right physician as they do in finding the right car, recliner, or lipstick?
When contemplating cosmetic surgery, it is absolutely imperative that you prepare a list of questions for your prospective surgeon and get to know them, their background and experience, their style of interacting with patients, and their most-oft and most successfully performed surgeries or procedures. Your life will be in his or her hands as there are risks involved with any surgery, no matter how minor, and you have a right to know everything that pertains to your surgery.
Dr. Babak Azizzadeh in Beverly Hills recommends asking the following questions at your initial consultation:
Be wary of a surgeon who discourages questions or does not answer them clearly and in terms you can understand. Remember that this is your life, and you have every right to know what to expect before, during and after your surgery.

- What board certifications does he or she have; these are the core specialty boards
- American Board of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
- American Board of Plastic Surgery
- American Board of Dermatology
- American Society of Ophthalmic & Reconstructive Surgery
- How long has he or she been performing cosmetic surgery
- How many time have they performed the surgery you are seeking
- Do they have Before & After Photos of actual patients
- Can you speak to another patient about his/her experience
- If it’s an outpatient procedure, is the facility certified and licensed
- What financing options are available
- What does post-operative care entail? Will he or she be available?
- And, of course, anything else that comes to mind
