What is the difference between a facial plastic surgeon and a general plastic surgeon?

A facial plastic surgeon performs cosmetic and reconstructive surgery on only the head, neck, and face.

Training for a facial plastic surgeon involves one or two years of post-graduate training in general surgery residency. They must also complete at least four additional years of specialty training in head and neck surgery and facial plastic surgery.

Some procedures that facial plastic surgeons, like Dr. Babak Azizzadeh, may perform include:

General plastic surgeons perform cosmetic surgery on both the face and the body. These plastic surgeons must complete three to five years in general surgery residency and two years of specialty training in all body areas.

Some procedures cosmetic plastic surgeons may perform include:

  • Breast augmentation
  • Liposuction
  • Tummy Tuck surgery

Both facial and general plastic surgeons must complete a four-year college degree plus another four years of medical school.

What does it mean to be double board-certified?

If you’re considering cosmetic surgery, it is important that your surgeon is a highly qualified, highly trained professional. You need to make sure that your prospective surgeon is board certified and is experienced performing the procedure you desire.

There are a few different boards that certify plastic and cosmetic surgeons such as the:

With plastic and cosmetic surgery, there are different areas of medicine that overlap one another. A double-board certified plastic surgeon, like Harvard-trained plastic surgeon Dr. Babak Azizzadeh, is someone who is double board certified. Plastic surgery is a specialty by itself, and also in conjunction with another area of specialty, such as ear, nose and throat surgery (otolaryngology).

A board-certified otolaryngologist, for example, can also be a certified plastic surgeon with the head and neck. Head and neck plastic surgery is a subspecialty of general plastic surgery. Consequently, there is a wide range of board-certified surgeons who specialize in different areas of medicine and practice as plastic and cosmetic surgeons.

What is rhinoplasty computer imaging?

To help you visualize what you may look like after your cosmetic surgery, computer imaging is a handy tool. This technique does not guarantee results, but can be helpful while planning for surgery . You and Dr. Babak Azizzadeh can discuss your desired results and determine which techniques are appropriate for achieving them.

Rhinoplasty computer imaging allows you to see the style of your new look prior to surgery. Your image will be entered into the computer via a digital camera or high-resolution scanned image. Once on the screen, your image is manipulated using different tools to change the features you prefer.

This way, you have the opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have while understanding what results are realistic. Computer imaging gives you a better idea of what to expect following your procedure.

While the changes appear realistic, the computer cannot accurately predict your final outcome. But this tool is valuable in helping you and Dr. Azizzadeh map out your desired changes and surgical goals.

By giving you a more accurate enhancement of your preferred appearance, a computer analysis can help you relax before surgery, which in turn leads to improved recovery period.

Advancements in rhinoplasty

A rhinoplasty or nose reshaping procedure is one of the most common surgical procedure in the World today.

Tracing back many years, the nasal reshaping procedure has made significant advancements in the past three decades. Longstanding, proven techniques embraced by the founders of rhinoplasty surgery continue to be practiced today.

From the 1950s to today, rhinoplasty history has seen a series of technological and cultural advancements. Once considered a luxury and primarily performed on affluent people, rhinoplasy surgery is now considered an acceptable way for anyone to modify their appearance.
Today’s advances continue as rhinoplasty surgeons better understand the complexity of the human nose. This improved comprehension de-mystifies rhinoplasty and makes the patient an active participant during the decision making process.

Rhinoplasty computer imaging allows you to preview and discuss with Dr. Babak Azizzadeh what changes you would like done to your nose. Through digital images, you can visualize what you may look like after surgery.
