Facial Reconstruction

Facial abnormalities and deformities can be emotionally, psychologically or physically devastating to an individual, causing that person to have less self confidence and even start to withdraw from society. Dr. Azizzadeh has given many patients with trauma to the face, neck and head a new outlook on life through facial reconstructive surgery.

Soft tissue and skeletal injuries to the face, head and neck can be caused by:
  • Accidents
  • Sports injuries
  • Cancer surgery
  • Birth disfigurements
  • Infectious disease
  • Congenital or developmental deformities
What is the difference between reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery?
Reconstructive surgery alters the appearance of abnormal facial structures opposed to enhancing already normal appearances. This complex surgery often requires transfer of bone and tissue from other regions of the body to restore normal function and aesthetics. The transfer of these tissues requires microscopic attachment of arteries, veins and nerves in order to allow completion of the reconstruction. Dr. Azizzadeh has extensive training and expertise in these microsurgical procedures, also known as microvascular free flap reconstruction.

What are some conditions that can be helped by facial reconstruction?
  • Facial paralysis
  • Cleft/lip palate
  • Ear abnormalities
  • Scar revision
  • Skin cancer treatment
  • Facial lacerations and fractures
  • Nasal obstruction

Fractional Skin Resurfacing

Over time, environmental and genetic factors can take a toll on your skin…the face, chest, arms, hands and more. Laser resurfacing technology can restore your skin to a more youthful appearance, and Dr. Azizzadeh uses the latest generation of resurfacing technology to get excellent results: Palomar Lux1540™ Fractional Laser.

How does fractional laser technology work?
The laser delivers light in high precision micro beams that create narrow, deep columns of skin coagulation (heat) that penetrate below the epidermis and into the dermis to eliminate old epidermal pigmented cells. The healthy tissue initiates a natural healing process, accelerating the production of collagen and new, tighter tissue to replace the skin’s imperfections. Coagulated cellular debris is expelled as the skin is resurfaced. The result is a fresher, more youthful skin tone and texture.

Our office will treat only a portion of your skin (20–25 percent) during each session. The number of sessions varies, but on average patients require three or four sessions.

Benefits of fractional laser technology:
  • Long-term results
  • No lasting redness – no down time
  • No long prep time – no tinted guide lotion or topical anesthetic required
  • Quick, pleasant treatments
  • Immediate, progressive results

What can fractional laser resurfacing do for you?
  • Improve aging skin
  • Smooth fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improve skin discoloration – melasma (brown patches on the face), pigmentation
  • Smooth acne or surgical scars
  • Erase areas of sun damage

To learn more about how we can erase the marks of time on your skin through fractional laser resurfacing, please contact our office today for an initial consultation.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty vs. Non-Ethnic Rhinoplasty

One of the most common plastic surgery procedures is the “nose job,” (rhinoplasty). The key to creating a natural-looking nose is for Dr. Azizzadeh to examine you thoroughly and create an individualized preoperative plan to address your specific aesthetic issues. Our office is experienced in taking into account different ethnicities to create a new nose that lives in harmony with the rest of your face.

How does an ethnic nose differ from a non-ethnic nose?
There are many cosmetic and physical differences to take into account when planning ethnic rhinoplasty surgery for any patient. Factors that may vary significantly by ethnicity include:
  • Thickness and fatty content of the skin
  • Weaker cartilage
  • Angle at which the nose projects from the skull (radix or root)
  • Size, proportion and angle of the nasal bridge (top part of the nose)
  • Size, shape and proportion of the tip (end of the nose)
  • Angle, thickness and shape of the base and nostrils
  • Nasolabial junction (where the base of the nose meets the upper lip)
  • Size, shape and placement of the maxilla (upper jaw that connects to the nose)

What is the recovery time?
Rhinoplasty is usually an outpatient procedure with recovery time lasting 1-2 weeks. Follow-up is a critical component of rhinoplasty as the nose will continue to improve over first 12 months. Rhinoplasty requires a long-term commitment by you and Dr. Azizzadeh to ensure a satisfactory outcome.

Asian Blepharoplasty healing time

In Asian blepharoplasty (double-eyelid surgery) Dr. Azizzadeh creates a pretarsal crease in the upper eyelid that is often absent in the eyes of Asian patients. Many have a “single eyelid” which does not appear to have a crease when the eye is open. Most Asian patients who elect to have this surgery are not seeking to modify their ethnic appearance, but rather remove the puffy and tired look associated with a fatty upper lid and create a brighter, more open-looking eye.

How is the surgery done?
Our office performs double-eyelid surgery using one of two techniques:
  • Open method – skin of the upper lid is removed and some of the upper lid structures shortened or rearranged
  • Suture method – a small incision is made in the natural crease to excise a small amount of fat and muscle
This procedure can be done in office under local anesthetic on an outpatient basis or in combination with other surgeries under general anesthetic.

What is the healing process?
Most patients can return to work in two days after Asian blepharoplasty surgery and can expect recovery after two weeks. However, because Asian eyelid skin is more “reactive” than Occidental skin, you may stay swollen or reddened for a longer time than regular blepharoplasty surgery (up to six to eight weeks). The crease position and shape will vary as the eyes continue to heal. By six months they eyes should reach their final configuration.

To learn more about how we can change the appearance of Asian eyes, please contact our office today for an initial consultation.
