Chin Augmentation
In Beverly Hills and serving the Los Angeles area
The goal of cosmetic surgery is to improve the overall appearance of the face to make you feel more comfortable with your looks. In many cases, the symmetry of the face may be thrown out of kilter by an overly prominent chin or by a hidden or sunken chin. Either of these conditions can be corrected with chin augmentation surgery also known as mentoplasty.
Dr. Babak Azizzadeh, Beverly Hills cosmetic surgeon, specializes in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. When you meet with him, he will evaluate your entire facial structure to determine how to augment your chin to conform it to the rest of your face.
Reduction
If your chin is too prominent, a chin reduction may be in order. In reduction operations, the mandible, or lower jawbone, is shaved and shaped to the desired look.
Chin reduction may be made by one of the following methods:
- Direct reduction — This is where excess bone is removed from the chin with a burr.
- Sliding genioplasty — This method cuts the bone and moves it backward, and is held in place with metal screws.
Augmentation
If the chin is not prominent, or is disproportionate, Dr. Azizzadeh may recommend a chin implant. Implants are made from autololgous bone collected from the patient's pelvis or rib, or from synthetic materials. A sliding genioplasty procedure may be used in conjunction with an implant, where the bone is cut and moved forward, then held in place with metal screws.
Some synthetic implants include:
- Silicone elastomers
- ePTFE, which is similar to Gore-tex
- Porous polyetheline
Bone implants, even if harvested from the patient's own body are more susceptible to rejection and infection, even years after the implant is placed.
Synthetic implants are biocompatible and do not show adverse problems when used inside the body. These types of implants are very malleable and porous, which allows the implant to be held in place by soft tissue, and grow into the existing bone while healing.
Other Procedures
Dr. Azizzadeh evaluates the proposed reduction in relation to other prominent facial features to ensure that your face is balanced. In some cases other surgeries may be conducted in conjunction with chin modifications in order to create balanced facial structures. Other surgeries commonly performed with chin surgery include:
To mitigate surgical risks, it is important when deciding on mentoplasty to find a reputable surgeon who specializes in facial cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.
