Aging Process of the Face
Dr. Azizzadeh has created the “Aging Arc” to describe aging in visual terms in relation to age in actual years. Dr. Azizzadeh’s goal for his patients is to put them in the positive range on the Aging Arc, meaning they appear radiant and the best they can for their chronological age. People in the negative range either appear older than their age indicates or drastically younger due to cosmetic intervention.
While environmental factors can have irreversible outcomes, there are certain elements of aging that are within human control. Dr. Azizzadeh endorses facial rejuvenation techniques that prolong his patients position in the positive range of the Aging Arc.
Facelift with Dr. Babak Azizzadeh at the Center
The old plastic surgery adage that “a facelift is a facelift” is no longer true. The aging process affects every individual differently. Genetic, environmental, and gravitational forces have significant impact on the facial appearance. Four key factors lead to the aging process:
- Gravitational laxity
- Volume loss secondary to fat redistribution and bony resorption
- Dynamic expression lines
- Loss of skin collagen and elasticity
Facial rejuvenation, therefore, cannot exclusively rely on surgery or non-invasive techniques. Every patient who is seeking to improve their appearance and reverse the signs of aging with Dr. Babak Azizzadeh will undergo The Comprehensive Facial Rejuvenation Consultation.
The Comprehensive Facial Rejuvenation Consultation
This comprehensive consultation will entail discussions about non-invasive and surgical techniques tailored to your unique needs. Skin care specialists, Dr. Azizzadeh and the entire staff are utilized to enhance the overall experience and outcome. A systematic approach will be undertaken to address the face, eyes, and neck, in its entirety in order to obtain a balanced, natural and un-operated appearance.
Unlike other plastic surgeons that may be only surgically oriented, Dr. Azizzadeh has a unique perspective of customizing surgical and non-invasive methods to comprehensively address the aging process. As a result, patients look more natural and well rested. Dr. Azizzadeh is the author of the best-selling book Beverly Hills Beauty Secrets and lead editor in the definitive medical textbooks Master Techniques in Facial Rejuvenation and Master Techniques in Blepharoplasty and Periorbital Rejuvenation. These textbooks are used all over the world by practicing plastic surgeons and in medical schools and training programs to teach budding surgeons. He is the co-director of the world renowned Cedars-Sinai Advances in Multispecialty Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery Symposium and the USC Facial Plastic Surgery Fellowship Program.
The first part of The Comprehensive Facial Rejuvenation Consultation will focus on preventative measures to slow down the aging process. The following considerations will be discussed:
- Anti-aging regimen
- Skin care consultation
- Sun protection regime
- Tobacco cessation
The second phase of the consultation will address non-invasive procedures to improve the facial appearance. Many patients will not need any further surgical intervention. The options include:
- Fractional Laser resurfacing
- Ulthera – nonsurgical skin tightening
- Non-surgical lower lid rejuvenation
- Liquid facelift
- Chemical peels
- Botox / Dysport
- Restalyne / Juvederm dermal fillers
- Multilevel fat grafting (MFG)
The third aspect of the consultation will discuss areas of the face that will benefit from facial plastic surgical intervention. All regions of the face will be evaluated in order to achieve a balanced and aesthetically pleasing outcome. Surgical and non-surgical methods are often combined in order to get the optimum outcome. The following regions and surgical options will be discussed:
THE BROW – EYE REGION

- Multilevel fat grafting (MFG)
THE MID-FACE AND NASOLABIAL FOLD REGION
- Rhytidectomy – facelift

THE LOWER FACE
The final phase of the consultation process will involve scar wound care, professional make up artists and hair stylists to enhance and optimize the results achieved through non-invasive and surgical methods. Camouflage techniques for the initial healing process will be discussed in order to allow the patient to return to daily activities as soon as possible. Skin care regimen with professional consultation will be continued.
- Image consultants
- Hair stylists
- Make up artists
- Continue anti-aging regimen
- Continue skin care regimen and consultation
In conclusion, a facelift alone cannot be the only consideration in facial rejuvenation. A comprehensive approach must be utilized to obtain consistent results that are natural and long lasting.
The mini-facelift rejuvenates the lower third of the face including the jowls and neck. Mini-facelifts accomplish many of the goals of the traditional face lift. The mini-facelift is also referred to as an S-lift or short incision facelift due to the shape and smaller size of the incision. Good candidates for the mini-facelift include people who want to take five years off their face. These patients may benefit from smaller incisions and the use of tiny barb sutures, instead of a large incision that requires heavier stitching.
The advantage to a mini-facelift is that it is tailored to meet specific needs, focusing primarily on trouble spots. Learn more about the Mini Facelift.
An endoscope is a specially designed device that allows Dr. Azizzadeh to do precise surgical work through a tiny incision located far from the surgical site. The endoscope is essentially a tiny camera on the end of a tube that allows the surgeon to see the actual surgery site through a small incision located in a concealed area.
How the endoscope makes a better facelift?
- Using an endoscope for the facelift procedure improves your results in a number of different ways, including reduced scarring and improved precision.
- The endoscope minimizes scarring. When your facelift is performed using an endoscope, the incisions are smaller, and can be camouflaged by natural facial features, such as the hairline or the front of the ear.
- The endoscope improves precision. Because we can reach and manipulate the muscle and fat deposits throughout the face, we can sculpt the features more precisely, preserving your natural facial contours and creating a more natural looking, vibrant look.
In facial cosmetic surgery, Dr. Azizzadeh utilizes the Endoscopic subperiosteal mid-facelift to address the hollowness under the lower eyelids (the cheek-eyelid complex) and improve the position of the nasolabial folds (laugh lines). These complex regions are not treated with traditional facelifts and eyelid procedures. Patients who have undergone traditional facelift procedures can have great results with the lower face (jowls, jaw-line) but often complain of persistent sagging of the mid-face resulting in an un-natural look and a “face-lifted” appearance. Most patients do not desire a “face-lifted” appearance. Addressing these areas in facial cosmetic surgery is extremely important for a youthful appearance of the face.
Secondary Revision Facelift
Dr. Babak Azizzadeh is a renowned revision facelift specialist based in Beverly Hills, California. He has been at the forefront of developing procedures to best address patients who have previously undergone facelift and eyelid procedures. Patients who present themselves for revision facelift procedures have significantly different needs than the patients who have not had prior facial rejuvenation procedures. As a result, secondary facelift procedures require special techniques and care because of previous surgical manipulations. Learn more about a secondary revision facelift.
Facelift after Weight Loss
When obese people begin to lose weight through bariatric surgery or other methods, they go through drastic aesthetic changes. While the fat may be gone, the excess skin is still there. This manifests itself in the face by making the person look older than they are due to the sagging skin. The appearance of heavy lines around the cheeks, beneath the eyes, and jowls gives a “St. Bernard look.” Because the neck is a sort of repository for fat, when the fat is gone, the drooping skin gives a kind of “turkey waddle.”
Because of this, cosmetic surgical procedures to improve the face and neck area are a good option. A facelift often combined with a neck lift will help patients face and neck appear more natural to match their body, as well as to appear more youthful. Both procedures are generally done at the same time. Learn more about a facelift after weight loss.
The Cheek lift is a surgical alternative to collagen and dermal filler injections for improving the nasolabial folds (“laugh lines”). This technique is an in-office or outpatient procedure that utilizes small incisions in the hairline and special sutures to smooth out the nasolabial folds. Local anesthesia is used and the results typically last about 5 years as compared to 3-4 months for collagen. The recovery time is about 4-5 days. Learn more about a cheek lift.
Facelift for Men
When it comes to facelifts for men and women, both procedures are typically the same. However, men age differently than women and they also have different needs and desires. This is where a female and male facelift tend to differ.
As men age, they desire to have a more youthful, virile and natural appearance. Men generally do not mind having some wrinkles to show for their life experience; however, they do mind having bags under their eyes and loose skin in the neck and jowl region . This heavy, sagging look is the reason most men seek facial rejuvenation.
For some men, a face and neck lift (also known as rhytidectomy) can solve most of their concerns. For others, they may also require multilevel fat grafting , eyelift (blepharoplasty), or fillers to complete a more youthful look by eliminating the drooping or sagging that can also occur above and below the eye.
How is a male facelift and necklift performed?
Male facelifts are very similar in nature to the female facelift; however there are some major differences that your surgeon must be aware of. Since men have side-burns, the incision in front of the ear needs to be carefully planned. I typically like to avoid that incision all together if possible by utilizing endoscopic facelift techniques and incisions behind the ear to completely camouflage. Another important issue in men is the over-pulled look windswept look. This is absolutely not acceptable as most men want to have a completely natural look.
If definition is an issue, implants may be utilized to improve a receding chin or underdeveloped cheek region. If complimentary procedures are agreed upon before hand, like injectables for definition or an eyelift to decrease sagging eyelids, these may be done at this time as well.
What should I know before a male facelift consultation?
Men should be aware to choose their surgeon carefully. They should make sure that their surgeon is board-certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery or the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Furthermore, their surgeon should have expertise in men and facial rejuvenation. In addition to their skill set, the surgeon needs to have the correct “aesthtetic eye” so that the final outcome is in line with your expectations.. In particular, since men tend to wear their hair shorter than women and thus have less options for hiding scar tissue, you will want to discuss the injection sites, how much scarring may or may not occur and the pros and cons of each option.
How long might recovery time last?
The male facelift is typically performed as an outpatient procedure. Recovery time is often as short as one to two weeks. However, as with all surgical procedures, you must have someone care for you for at least 72 hours after your surgery is done. Read more about plastic surgery options for men.
You will be given a surgery packet with thorough information detailing the healing process, what to expect and tips to reduce swelling and bruising. However, here are a few additional tips:
- Clean the incisions with hydrogen peroxide once daily.
- Apply antibiotic ointments to all incisions twice daily.
- All stitches will be removed in 4-8 days.
- Wear the chinstrap provided as much as possible for 1 week after leaving surgery center. Remove if skin irritation begins. DO NOT allow Ace bandage to roll up or wrinkle under the chin.
- DO NOT use earrings for three (3) weeks after surgery.
- Ice cubes in rubber gloves, cold compresses or frozen peas should be used for 72 hours on an hourly basis when awake. Then after, use warm compress in areas of bruising.
- KEEP HEAD ELEVATED WHILE RESTING, RELAXING, OR SLEEPING FOR AT LEAST 1-2 WEEKS.
- You may shower with lukewarm water starting 48 hours after surgery.
- No heavy exercise for 2 weeks.
