Laser Skin Resurfacing - Additional Information

In Beverly Hills and serving the Los Angeles area

Lasers are used to treat the skin because of the high-energy beam of light that selectively transfers its energy into tissue. Lasers are able to produce and amplify light through a material that allows the light beam to collimate and become intense with the use of two mirrors. Many procedures cannot be completed without the laser and many procedures are done better without the laser. The laser is not always the best tool for surgery even with its sparkle, pure color, and high-energy beam. The facial plastic surgeon decides which surgical method to use. Considering the results, the possible complications and the alternative allow the doctor to choose the most appropriate method.

What can laser surgery do for you?

The facial plastic surgeon is trained in the use of laser and understands when and how to use them. The surgeon will decide if he/she wants to use the laser and which would be the best choice for the situation.

The use of lasers in laser skin resurfacing by physicians enables them to make incisions, vaporize tumors, close blood vessels, selectively reduce pigmentation, and even treat skin wrinkles. Lasers are able to change tissue without making an incision. Major surgery does not have to be performed to treat birthmarks or damaged blood vessels, remove port-wine stains, and shrink facial "spider veins" because of the laser.

Facial plastic surgeons use lasers on a routine basis. The laser is used as a scalpel leaving the tissue sterile with bleeding greatly reduced. Port-wine stains are treated without cuts; the laser penetrates through the skin to shrink the abnormal blood vessels that cause the marks.

Types of laser surgery:

  • Laser Skin Resurfacing -
    • Reduce wrinkles around the lips or eyes, even the entire face
    • Softens fine wrinkles
    • Removes certain blemishes on the face
  • Laser Removal of Birthmarks and Skin Lesions -
    • The abnormal blood vessels that cause port-wine stain birthmarks are reduced in size by the laser and the treated area lightens. Skin growths, facial "spider veins," warts, and some tattoos respond well to the use of the laser. The patient may see results after the first treatment but typically more than one laser treatment is needed.
    • Minimum laser intensity preserves as much healthy tissue as possible, resulting in multiple treatments.
    • Many of these procedures are performed as outpatient procedures in hospitals or offices.
  • Laser Hair Transplants -
    • The laser is used to prepare the area where the hair transplants are needed.
  • New Lasers -
    • Constant technological advances leading to new application of future generations of lasers.
