Septoplasty

In Beverly Hills and serving the Los Angeles area

Septoplasty is a corrective surgical procedure to correct a malformed, or deviated, septum.

The septum is the narrow wall of cartilage that separates the two nasal cavities (nostrils). Whether through injury or natural defect, many people with deviated septums have difficulty breathing and other health problems as a result.

Deviated septum
Some of the problems caused or exacerbated by a deviated septum include:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Sleep apnea
  • Excessive snoring
  • Poor nasal drainage
  • Sinus infections
  • Nasal polyps

The septoplasty procedure
The septoplasty procedure-also referred to as Sub-Mucous Resection (SMR) of the septum, or septal reconstruction-involves clearing away excess cartilage and surgically straightening and evening the septum, to clear the airways and straighten the nose, both functionally and cosmetically.

The septoplasty procedure is usually done under twilight sedation with local anesthetics, or under general anesthesia, and takes approximately half an hour to complete. The procedure itself is performed through a small incision on the inside of the nose, so you should be left with no visible scarring after the procedure.

While septoplasty is not a cosmetic procedure, it is often combined with a cosmetic rhinoplasty procedure, performed at the same time.

If you have additional questions about septoplasty or any other nose surgery, please contact Dr. Azizzadeh to schedule an initial consultation. Dr. Azizzadeh performs many face, nose, and eye procedures on patients in the Beverly Hills and Los Angeles, California area.
